Design Engineering Manager

We at Leggett & Platt Automotive are looking for a Design Engineering Manager to join our rapidly growing Automotive Team in Carthage, MO. We are a multi-billion-dollar globally diversified company that designs and manufactures various engineered components and products. Our growing automotive business unit, which exceeds one billion dollars in sales, is comprised of four main product segments with operations on three continents. Our customers include OEM and Tier 1 automotive companies.

In this role, you will report to the Branch Manager while designing machines and processes whilst maintaining a Safety-First approach in all activities. You and your team will optimize the efficiency of manufacturing in the plant while managing the work to stay within the budget. As part of the Branch Management Team you will have close interactions with most areas to establish efficient processes to meet our customers needs.

What you will be doing?

  • Leading a Safety-First approach maintaining a zero-accident culture. Ensures and monitors work, accident prevention and environmental protection regulations of the facility to assure a safe and productive work environment free of any liabilities or defects.
  • Develop and manage within the engineering budget.
  • Monitors quality and quantity of output of processes; takes appropriate action, including shutdown, to prevent scrap and assists others in investigations to determine causes of process defects and downtime.
  • Supports in DFM and DFSS in new product development.
  • Designs and develops new manufacturing processes (including equipment specifications to support RFQ process) in line with latest technology advancements within global manufacturing standards.
  • Optimize manufacturing efficiency/lean excellence through flexible manufacturing structure, improvement through Lean Manufacturing methods within operations and optimize production utilization and strategy.
  • Maintain a culture of functional and operational excellence, supports 6S, lean initiatives, and to be a committed role model for our company s Beliefs and Behaviors.
  • Develops PFMEA, process flow, and work instructions.
  • Manages plant layout to support lean process flow and optimization of total facility footage.
  • Establish and maintain appropriate internal capabilities and strengthen the organization (Succession Planning) through training, career development opportunities, and recruiting as necessary to achieve manufacturing objectives.
  • Adherence to internal and external business processes and certifications synonymous with a large U.S. Incorporation operating within the automotive industry and all other local legal requirements.

We are looking for someone with:

  • Ability to manage a budget, adhere to the set budget, and keep in line with a continuous improvement environment
  • Ability to manage processes to reduce waste and defects and improve our current manufacturing processes
  • Working knowledge of operational metrics and improvement tools (VSM, PDCA, 8 wastes, line balancing, etc.)
  • Adequate experience in the use of common IT-solutions (MS Office, HFM, etc.)
  • Hands-on mentality and excellent communication skills both written and oral
  • Social and intercultural competence as well as good interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Commitment to 100% safety, quality and continuous improvement
  • Ability to interact positively with employees of all levels across the organization
