The Medical Technologist II works under the general supervision of the Section Coordinator and/or Laboratory Director and assists the physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of medical disorders and in evaluating patient recovery by performing, analyzing and documenting a variety of microscopic, bacteriologic and/or chemical diagnostic laboratory tests; conducts advanced tests specific to a particular laboratory section.i.e. hematology, chemistry, blood bank, microbiology, etc.; performs incidental specimen procurement, preparation and processing; participates in the education of medical technology students. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values and Mercy Service Standards.
Demonstrates stewardship of resources in regards to inventory, time management and meeting productivity standards.
Operational Effectiveness
Performs the full range of testing and reporting according to department policies and procedures as required.
Accurately performs and records quality control, calibration and instrument maintenance.
Organizes, prioritizes and completes work to achieve defined turnaround times and expectations.
Troubleshoots and resolves problems or unexpected test results in a timely manner and documents and communicates to appropriate stakeholders along with completing incident reports as necessary.
Participates in maintaining current department policies and procedures.
Communicates professionally and effectively with co-workers, other health-care professionals, vendors and the public.
Demonstrates appropriate use of information systems (HIS, LIS, software, Internet, etc.)
Performs the acquisition, labeling and transfer of all required types of specimens for laboratory testing: utilizing accurate, effective, professional and confidential accepted methodologies as required.
Performs all tasks associated with processing, transfer and referral of required laboratory specimens in accordance with applicable regulatory standards and departmental policies as required.
Workplace Excellence
Complies with laboratory management requests to meet staffing plans and department needs.
Demonstrates initiative to assist the laboratory in all areas.
Works collaboratively with all co-workers to accomplish laboratory, department or hospital goals.
Attends departmental, laboratory and hospital meetings as required.
Participates in the training and education of others as requested.
Actively monitors and maintains inventory of reagents and supplies.
Orders inventory of reagents and supplies as required.
Acts as a mentor for others.
Quality
Reviews and evaluates quality control in accordance with quality plan, documenting finds and implementing corrective action.
Demonstrates and documents competency in areas of assigned responsibility.
Reviews, evaluates and correlates laboratory results before releasing and reporting according to policies and procedures.
Communicates and documents critical information according to policies and procedures.
Recognizes, identifies and engages in opportunities for process improvement.
Ensures quality and integrity of specimens prior to testing.
Participates in proficiency testing.
Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
Participates in collection of process improvement data.
Demonstrates less than 3 errors, resulting in chart revision, in a continuous 12 month period.
Participates in collection and review of process improvement data.
Participates in projects or on committees within the laboratory.
Assists with validation and verification of new instruments, test kits or new equipment.
Completes assigned projects within the time frame provided.
Acts as a liaison with another departments
Actively participates in meeting accreditation standards.
Performs other duties as required.
Continuing Education
Accumulates a minimum of 12 CEUs per year (accepted CEUs include educational programs such as webinars, on-line education, conferences, classes, etc., programs must be related to medical laboratory science or provide education acceptable for acquisition of a position available at the hospital, a certificate of attendance or other documentation of completion is required). Other developmental opportunities must be approved by lab management prior to commencement. Lab management will determine CEU award.
Complete mandatory courses on time.
Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry or Biology and graduation from an accredited medical technology program required. Required to meet minimum CLIA testing personnel qualifications for high complexity testing. Clia 493.1489 and 493.1491.
Certifications: ASCP or equivalent certification preferred.
Other: Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, as well as analytical and mathematical ability required to analyze and interpret test results, including determination of casualty. Required to meet minimum CLIA testing personnel qualifications for high complexity testing. CLIA 493.1489 and 493 1491. Ability to operate various equipment and computers in a clinical lab environment.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
