Staff Accountant

Leggett & Platt, Incorporated is seeking a Staff Accountant in the financial reporting department at our Corporate Office in Carthage, MO. The Staff Accountant will be responsible for analyzing and reconciling balance sheet and profit and loss accounts on a quarterly and annual basis.  The Staff Accountant will also participate in the preparation of quarterly and annual filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) as well as numerous other monthly/quarterly internal reports that are used by one or more departments within Leggett. The Staff Accountant may also assist in and/or perform accounting research for new accounting standards or unique accounting issues that arise for Leggett and may be responsible for some duties related to forecasts and projections.


Essential Responsibilities

  • Reconcile and analyze Balance Sheet and P&L accounts on a quarterly and annual basis

  • Support the preparation of the consolidated financial statements, including quarterly and annual filings with the SEC

  • Prepare or assist with the preparation of internal use reports

  • Ensure Compliance with internal controls

  • Collaborate with financial reporting staff daily, acting as a team to complete tasks

  • Coordinate efforts with the segment reporting department, as well as other corporate departments

  • Assist internal and external auditors with account reconciliation and analysis of activity


  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Accounting or Finance (a minimum of 15 hours of accounting is required)

  • Cumulative 3.30 GPA and 3.50 GPA in major


Desired Skills/Competencies

  • Excellent problem-solving skills

  • Strong oral and written communication

  • Strong computer skills with demonstrated strength in Excel and Word

  • CMA/CPA preferred

This position will partner with various other departments, including tax, credit, information technology, human resources, business intelligence, corporate development and others in carrying out the responsibilities listed above. This position will also interact with accounting personnel who work at our branch locations. As experience is obtained, the staff-level accountant will have the opportunity to advance with the Corporate Accounting department, as well as other areas of the company.

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
